Internships When Abroad

Students | Tips for Students | 04/01/15

Interning can be extremely rewarding; at the end of an internship, you will have some insightful work experience and have learnt new skills that will make you a valuable commodity when you enter the workforce. Interning abroad shows that you can adapt to changes in your environment, you have knowledge of different cultures and you're not afraid of challenges. Individuals who have performed internships have far better chances of getting a job after finishing university than those who do not, and some degrees even require that you do one during the course.

So now that you’re impressed with the advantages of international internships, you may be wondering: “How can I get one?” It’s not as hard as it seems, and we’re here to help!

Choose “Where”

Is there another language that you know? Good! Now you can travel to more places! You have increased your options! Speak French? Your options are not just limited to Paris. There are other cities and even other countries!

Decide “When”

A great time to do an internship is when you are studying abroad; that way you can kill two birds with one stone. If you've already studied abroad, chose not to, or didn't have the opportunity, you can always choose the summer months during your studies, or even after you finish. Whatever you decide, make sure that the timing is right for you.

Find Your Fit

Start looking on websites that offer students jobs for internships! There’s a lot of them, and many are tailored to individuals who speak English! Keep in mind that you are looking in a specific field and know what you are looking to get out of your experience! Do not just apply for internships because it could be a good fit. Know that it is the right spot for you!

The Paperwork

Identity Papers

If you’re doing your internship abroad, you need to get permission from the host country’s government. This comes in the form of a Visa. Go to that country’s website to see what steps are required for you to be able to get one.

Driving License

This changes from country to country. In some you need to obtain an international permit, however in others there is no requirement whatsoever. Check online to see what is right for your situation.

Changing Your Address

This is simple. Cancel your magazines and notify the post office that you will be relocating. They may even be able to forward your mail for you!

Vaccines?

Finally make sure that there are no vaccines that are required for you to enter some countries. Check with your doctor to make sure that you have them all.

Insured?

It is imperative that you think about your health while away! Don’t get stuck with bills because you forgot to get health insurance. There are many different policies available to you for when you’re completing an internship. There is even typically a choice of where to purchase your policy from your home country or your host country. Make sure to find out which is right for you.

The Move

One of the most daunting parts of getting an internship is finding where to live. Furthermore, most internships are not paid and if they are, they are most certainly never well paid. This means it’s necessary to find an affordable place. How can you find a place that is affordable without sacrificing quality?
