Studying in York: what to do and where to stay

Students | Tips for Students | 08/11/17

York is a beautiful city filled with so much culture and history, as well as lively and vibrant as a student-city for the students at the University of York and York St. John University. It’s the perfect size- just big enough to have a buzz and a lot going on, but small enough to not be too intimidating, and easy to cycle and walk around, especially when it’s your first time away from home! If you’re lucky enough to be studying in York, be sure to find out how to make the most of your time!

What to do

When in York there are a few absolute must-do’s that you can’t miss out on. First of all, the York Minster. It is the largest medieval cathedral in Northern Europe and is a building of astounding beauty so can’t be missed! In the stunning surroundings of the medieval ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey, you can also go and sit in the Museum Gardens and enjoy their beauty with a picnic on a summer’s day. York has a great music scene too- whether you want to get involved with an open mic night, or just enjoy a chilled one with your friends, there is always something for you, with citywide venues showcasing everything from household names to local talent. With regard to food, York has so many restaurants and bars to offer, be it the large chains or smaller independent ones; Nook is a small café which does amazing sandwiches, coffees and cocktails, and Fossgate Social is a vibrant but relaxed bar to spend a chilled evening with friends. What’s more, in this amazing student city, Reel cinema offers tickets from as cheap as 4.50 for the latest films- what better way to spend a rainy evening than to see a new movie with for your friends at such little cost!

York also has a great student life to explore, where you’ll find yourself ending up in Kuda, Fibbers or Popworld on your nights out, or rather a smaller bar or pub if the big clubs aren’t your scene!

Where to stay

As for finding accommodation in York, there are house shares on offer through several different companies for all around the city which is generally the done thing for university students when they move out of halls. On Roomlala, we offer a wide range of alternative accommodation from spare rooms to flatshares if that is what you would like to do. The rent for a spare room is considerably lower than that of a traditional rental. Also, renting cheaper forms of accommodation also allows you to have more money to spend on leisure during your studies!
