Portland, Oregon is an exciting, modern city that is one of the largest in the United States. Students at the many universities and colleges are never short of things to do, with a vibrant art and music scene as well as an impressive social and restaurant offering. Ranked as the 8th most popular city to live in, Portland is sure to be a great destination for any aspiring student. It’s known for its friendliness, microbreweries and coffee houses, and the city’s unofficial slogan is ‘Keep Portland Weird’, so there’s sure to be something for you! To help you decide, we’ve picked out four very different options…

Downtown

Portland’s Downtown area is a dream come true for people who like to do – the area is full of hustle and bustle with some of the greatest eateries in the state! The Pioneer Courthouse square is fondly nicknamed ‘Portland’s Living Room’ and the markets, restaurants, music venues and parks are sure to make you feel in the middle of things. The housing on offer varies massively, from old to new, so keep an eye out for what takes your fancy and be quick to snap it up! Commuting from Downtown to Portland State University is a breeze, and it’s an option for other campuses too.

Goose Hollow

One of the oldest areas in the city, Goose Hollow boasts some of Portland’s best architecture that is best appreciated by a gentle stroll through the surroundings. That isn’t to say it’s a sleepy area – there are plenty of restaurants and bars to keep you occupied, and as a student area it is very popular. Close to PSU and Oregon Health & Science University, and in walking distance of most things you need, the variety of housing on offer is sure to offer something within your budget.

University Park

As the name suggests, University Park is home to a university – the University of Portland, one of the oldest schools in the area with a great reputation. The area is full of students as a result, but also has a sizeable population of families and locals. There are good public transport offerings to get to the centre but it is a 10 minute drive to downtown Portland, which may be a consideration for some students.

South Waterfront

South Waterfront is the new up and coming district in Portland. Although its high rises and glossy finish may not be inkeeping with the ‘Old Portland’ style, it is home to the OHSU and therefore is a great choice for students based there. It is almost futuristic in design and uses sustainable, recycled materials. This is a great area for sporty, athletic types or those who like big open spaces.

With so many areas to choose from, native Portlanders even created a guide to the neighborhoods of the city! If you’re not sure what type of accommodation you want in amongst all this, why not check out our articles on flatsharing to see if it’s right for you!
