Things to Do in Manchester

What to Do in Manchester in 3 Days

Travel | Europe | 01/23/17

Old Trafford, the Theatre of Dreams, is a mythical destination for sports fans, and Manchester is well known for its two world-class football teams. But aside from the exploits of the Red Devils, the city has much to offer and is worth a long weekend to visit all the major sights. Roomlala has prepared a tailor-made trip for 3 days and has some tips on the best ways to find accommodation in Manchester.

Day 1: Return to the origins of the industrial revolution

To begin to get your head around Manchester, we recommend a trip to the fantastic Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) which will give you an insight into the important role that this Northern city played in the Industrial Revolution at the end of the 19th century. Entrance is free and you can explore a hangar dedicated to aviation. You can continue your trip in Castlefield, an area famed for its canals. When the time comes to kick back with a drink, there are a huge number of trendy bars at the heart of this revamped industrial zone. To end the day, why not head to the Northern Quarter to discover the beauty of the city’s street art.

Day 2: City of grunge and neogothic

For your second day in Manchester, head to Afflecks in the Northern Quarter. This 4-storey alternative department store offers a real mix of styles – from grunge to tattoos, from vinyls to used furniture. Thanks to the café within the galleries, you can take a quick break from a shopping spree. From there, you can go admire the neogothic architecture of the John Rylands library and browse a few of the 250,000 works housed there. For another taste of the history of the city, check out the town hall and the cathedral.

Day 3: the Theatre of Dreams and the Etihad Stadium

Manchester’s two football clubs have made it famous all over the world. Manchester United, home to iconic players such as Eric Cantona, George Best and David Beckham, is the older of the two teams. The team plays at Old Trafford every week, a real gem which deserves a visit. The Manchester City stadium is also worth a trip: the Etihad may not be as old, but it is still just as impressive for lovers of the beautiful game. End your day by going to one of the countless concerts which take place in the city’s pubs and clubs.
